In the Field with JP: Episode 07

We’re back at our historic Guilford project, where the new orangery addition is taking shape. If you recall from our previous episode, an orangery is a glass-filled living space that blends the beauty of the outdoors with the comfort of the indoors. Basically we’re taking a sunroom to a higher level!

The structure is up, the brickwork is underway (with a carefully matched blend to the original house), and prep is complete for radiant floor heating that will keep this new space warm and welcoming.

From skylights to framework for sliding doors, every detail is coming together with precision. Stay tuned—this one’s going to be special!

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:

Hey guys, we’re back at our historic project in Guilford where we’re adding an orangery on the back of the house. It’s been a couple of weeks, so let’s check on the progress.

We’re back on site, and the structure is up now. A couple of things to point out outside — first, our ZIP sheathing. Love to see that in place. It’s our water-resistive barrier, applied directly to the plywood sheathing, and the ZIP tape detail along the bottom helps make sure we don’t get any water intrusion into the base of the wall system.

Over here, the masons are coming out today to start laying the brick around the foundation. On an older home like this, it’s critical that we achieve a good match to the existing masonry. We built three or four different samples and landed on one that’s a really close match to the original brick. That work is starting today, and it’s going to look great.

Stepping inside, a few things to note — we’re ready to pour our concrete floor. The insulation is down, thermal breaks are installed around the edges, welded wire reinforcement is in place, and all the electrical conduit and plumbing for the radiant floor heat have been run. This floor is going to be nice and warm once it’s complete.

Looking up, you can see the large opening for the sliding doors and two big cutouts in the ceiling for our pyramidal skylights. The framing looks really clean and precise — everything’s tight and well executed. Excited to come back in a couple of weeks and see how this space continues to take shape.

That’s it for today. We’ll be back out as this project progresses — looking forward to having you follow along. This one’s going to be a good one.xxx
