Mac’s Top Ten Ways to Prepare Your Home for Fall

As we move into fall and winter is right around the corner, it’s important to make sure that your home is ready for the changing weather. There are a few simple items that every homeowner should have on their checklist which can help prepare your home and prevent unwanted issues when things get cold.

Gutters & Downspouts

After most of the leaves fall, clean out gutters and make sure that downspouts are clear.

Hose Bibs & Spigots

Turn off interior shut off valves, open up exterior spigots, bleed out excess water and detach any hoses.

Chimneys & Fireplaces

Have your wood-burning fireplaces & chimneys cleaned and inspected before you have your first fire of the season.

HVAC Inspection

Have a service technician inspect your furnace and make sure all HVAC filters are replaced if needed.

Fire Safety & Prevention

Test all smoke detectors to make sure they are working properly.

Windows & Doors

Ensure all windows and doors are sealed properly to keep your home more efficient in the cooler weather.

Dryers & Dryer Vents

Make sure your clothes dryer and dryer vent are thoroughly cleaned and inspected for obstructions.

Exterior Inspection

Walk around the exterior of your home and look for missing shingles or siding, animal/pest intrusion, cracks in masonry, rotted trim, etc.

Snow and Ice Prep

Stock up on ice melt and pick up a snow shovel if last years shovel was damaged or broken.

Fire extinguisher

With more kitchen activity during the Fall, make sure you have an up-to-date fire extinguisher in case something goes wrong.
