At Smithouse, great design starts with people who are as thoughtful and intentional as the spaces they create—and Bailey Hock is a perfect example of that.
Since joining our team two years ago, Bailey has grown into a key member of our interior design group, bringing a unique blend of technical knowledge and creative insight to every project she touches. With a background rooted in both hands-on experience and formal training from Virginia Tech, her approach is grounded, collaborative, and deeply attentive to the details that make a home feel truly personal.
Whether she’s helping clients bring bold ideas to life or refining the subtle elements that elevate a space, Bailey’s passion for design is evident in everything she does. We sat down with her to talk about her journey into the industry, what inspires her work, and where she sees design heading next.
1. What first drew you to interior design, and how did your experience at Virginia Tech shape your path into the industry?
I have always been drawn to design, whether it was fabrics, wallpaper, or how different elements come together in a space. I was definitely the kid watching HGTV! At Virginia Tech, I was able to turn that passion into a clear career path. I had the opportunity to learn from industry professionals through practical case studies. Visiting the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) my senior year was a highlight, giving me insight into emerging trends and technologies. Connecting with alumni for two summer internships helped me gain hands-on experience and ultimately led me toward custom residential design.
2. Since joining Smithouse two years ago, how has your role evolved—and what have you enjoyed most about being part of the team?
Since joining Smithouse two years ago, my role has evolved quite a bit. I spent my first year and a half working in the cabinetry division, which gave me a strong technical foundation and a detailed understanding of how designs come together. Transitioning into the design team from that role has been a natural progression, allowing me to bring that technical knowledge directly into the creative process. What I’ve enjoyed most about being part of the team is how collaborative the environment is. We have such a talented group of people, and it’s exciting to be able to bring even the most ambitious ideas to life.
3. How would you describe your design approach or philosophy when working with clients?
I focus on the small details and really listening to my clients. I try to incorporate insights from our conversations and observations into the design, so each space feels thoughtful and personal. I think that attention to detail helps elevate the overall experience clients have with our team.
4. What trends or shifts are you seeing in the remodeling and design industry right now—and which ones do you find most exciting?
I’m seeing a shift toward more color and personality in design. Clients are moving away from the all-gray and white palette and feeling more comfortable incorporating bold pops of color. Whether it’s through colorful cabinetry, statement appliances, or even color drenching an entire room, it’s exciting to see spaces feel more expressive and unique!
5. Where do you see the future of home design heading, particularly in how people want to live and use their spaces?
I see home design continuing to move toward more personalized, lifestyle-driven spaces. People want their homes to reflect their interests, whether that’s incorporating a sauna and cold plunge for wellness and recovery or creating a wine room to showcase their curated collection. It’s all about designing spaces that feel tailored and meaningful.
6. What’s one detail or design decision that homeowners often overlook, but can make a big impact in the final result?
Lighting! It’s one of the most overlooked details in any project and one of the most transformative. It can make a space feel warm and inviting, highlight your favorite design details, and completely change the mood of a room. Thoughtfully planning it out can make a huge difference in the final result.
7. When you’re not working on projects, how do you like to spend your time? Any hobbies or interests that influence your creativity?
Outside of work, staying active is a big part of my life. You will find me running or in a spin or yoga class.I have been skiing since I was a kid, and it’s still one of my favorite things. I also love exploring new restaurants wherever I am. On fall Sundays, I’m cheering on the Ravens! I recently took up needlepoint, which has been a fun way to express creativity in a different medium. I also have a passion for travel and find myself naturally drawn to the design and architecture of every place I visit.
