Ice Dams: A Small Winter Problem That Can Cause Major Home Damage

Winter weather can be beautiful, but it can also be deceptively destructive. One of the most common (and costly) cold-weather issues we see in our region is ice damming. While it often starts quietly along your roofline or in your gutters, ice damming can lead to serious damage if left unaddressed.

What Is Ice Damming?
Ice dams form when snow on your roof melts and refreezes at the eaves. Heat escaping from the home warms the upper roof, causing snow to melt. As that water runs toward colder edges, it refreezes, creating a “dam” of ice that traps additional melting snow behind it.

Why Ice Dams Are a Problem
Once water is trapped, it has nowhere to go but back under shingles and into places it doesn’t belong. Over time, this can lead to:

  • Roof leaks and interior water damage

  • Compromised insulation and mold growth

  • Damaged gutters and downspouts pulled away by the weight of ice

  • Water pooling near the foundation, increasing the risk of cracks or basement leaks

What begins as a frozen edge can quietly affect multiple systems of your home.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Thick ridges of ice along the roofline

  • Icicles forming from gutters or eaves

  • Water stains on ceilings or walls

  • Sagging or overflowing gutters during freeze–thaw cycles

Prevention Is Key
The best defense against ice damming is a proactive approach. Proper insulation and ventilation help regulate roof temperatures, while well-maintained gutters and downspouts allow water to flow away from the home efficiently. Seasonal inspections, especially before and during winter, can catch small issues before they become major repairs.

At Smithouse, we believe thoughtful maintenance is just as important as great design. Whether it’s a simple inspection, gutter repair, or a more comprehensive solution, our Handyman Division is here to help protect your home through every season.
